RETIREMENTS MARK TURNING POINT FOR GOP By Daniel Schorr NPR

Intrigued by a wilting GOP legislative branch? With the recent announcement from Trent Lott, just two years into a new political life since aligning himself publically with an old guard segregationist (Strom Thurman), the score is now 6 retiring Republican Senators and 17 retiring Republican House members.
I could put my usual spin / my left leaning views on the reasons why, but it would pale in comparison to an old time journalist like NPR's Daniel Schorr.
Invest 2 minutes and click on the link here, and listen to Mr. Schorr's viewpoints. It will be a valuable introduction to the National Reviews upcoming edition entitled "The Coming Cataclism," noting the failure, and ultimate departures of the old guard GOP legislators.

I posted similar thoughts before on your weblog and would like to say again. If the situation was reverse and a Democrat was in the White House the last 7 years, the right would be singing a different tone on the complete dismal effects the Executive Branch has brought, including I believe impeachment hearings. Far less started that process with the last administration. Really, how in the hell can we go from what could be called the golden 90’s to the disgrace we now see? Seriously even if you are a major supporter of the Republican party, if you ran it like your business even they the guys leaving could of come up with a plan to get him out of there. I hope liberals take control of Congress and the White house in 2008. But make no mistake, just because they may be blessed with the keys to the car, will expect them to run it responsibly. Bottom line… Where in the hell has leadership been? Sad, sad disgust we deserve and should expect better.

What blows my mind is Trent Lott attributing his departure because he has "grown weary of trying to get things done with the people on the other side of the aisle unwilling to compromise."

Typical. Nothing said of all the money he is going to make as a Washington lobbyist.....or to mention the new stricter lobbyist laws, and the effect they will have on his.....wait for it....SON WHO IS ALREADY A LOBBYIST!!!!

This is leadership? This is a Senate minority leader? No. This is the asshole who agreed with Strom Thurman during his abolishionist days, saying times would be better today, if we had listened to good ol' Strom during his hey days.

Trouble is, as the old guard goes out, a new, reactionary / hard line of "religious" conservatives will come in with their viewpoints. These new conservatives will make the old ones look like true elder statesmen.
