PALIN-TOLOGY

For the people who do not read Slate magazine on-line as I do... some Sarah Palin tid-bits
  1. Her diet is "heavy in wild Alaskan seafood, moose, caribou and fresh fruit."
  2. Palin's first-born son, Track, was born on April 20, 1989, almost eight months to the day after she eloped and married her husband, Todd, on August 29, 1988.
  3. She does believe in climate change, but she has expressed doubts that human activity is to blame.
  4. Palin has said she is "as pro-life as any candidate can be and called abortion "an atrocity." She has supported mandatory parental consent, and while she is pro-contraception, has also indicated her preference for abstinence education over "explicit sex-ed programs." She would permit abortion in cases where the mother's life was endangered, but not in the case of rape or incest.
  5. Palin said in a 2006 debate that she supports teaching creationism alongside evolution in public schools on the grounds that "healthy debate is so important."
  6. Palin on Iraq: "I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq. I heard on the news about the new deployments, and while I support our president, Condoleezza Rice and the administration, I want to know that we have an exit plan in place."
  7. Palin asked the Wasilla library "how she could go about banning books" with offensive language. It's not clear whether any book was ever banned.
  8. When she was running for governor in 2006, Palin said she supported a $223 million federal earmark for the Gravina Island Bridge. Congress eventually killed the earmark after it became a symbol of pork-barrel spending, but Alaska was given the same amount of money to spend on other projects. She lied about it last night in her speech.
  9. The Alaska governor has no command role with National Guard troops engaged in combat operations or with the 49th Missile Defense Battalion, which is stationed in Alaska. She does command the National Guard when it comes to natural disasters and homeland security. These issues are handled by a member of her cabinet, Maj. Gen. Craig.
  10. Cindy McCain and others have asserted that Alaska's proximity to Russia has contributed to Palin's foreign-policy knowledge. This is a bold faced lie, she has never been to Russia.
  11. Sarah Palin fired former Alaska Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan, who said the governor pressured him to fire an Alaska state trooper who happened to be getting divorced from Palin's sister. Palin has denied these allegations. Alaska's state legislature voted in July to get an independent investigator to look into the firing.
  12. The environmental Web site Grist.org has reported that she objected to listing polar bears or beluga whales as endangered in Alaska, fearing it might affect Alaskan drilling projects. She also voted against a proposition to limit mining where runoff would threaten salmon populations.
  13. Alaska has long been the recipient of astounding amounts of federal funding. While Palin slashed pork requests in half during her tenure, the state still requested $550 million in Palin's first year in office. This year she has requested about $198 million—$295 per person—which is still the highest amount per-capita in the country, according to Taxpayers for Common Sense. And when she was the mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired an Anchorage-based firm to secure $27 million in federal earmarks for the town.

Again, I ask you what point you are trying to make.

1. Is there something wrong with her diet. Is it too Republican?

2. Palin's first born son.....OMG, the shame of it all. Wake up, this is the 21st century, not the beginning of the 20th century. And this coming from a democratic mouth piece.

3. ....doubts that human activity is to blame" I disagree with her on that point, but is that believe such a horrific revelation to the democratic party?

4. She's pro life but would she would permit abortion if the mother's life was endangered. So what is so earth shattering about that?

5. I totally agree with her on this point. Teach it all or teach nothing at all. Teach the kids to have an open mind and teach them to have respect for the other point of view.

6. I can't even see the relevance in this point being listed.

7. ...banning books with offensive language......and your point is?

8. "....... she lied about it last night in her speech" Like she's the first politician to have lied??? Come on now, spare me!!!!

9."The Alaska governor has no command role with National Guard troops engaged in combat operations... OK, SO WHAT?

10. Cindy McCain made this assertion, NOT PALIN!!! So don't tell me that Palin is lying!!!!!

11. POLITICS!!! Don't you get it?? It's all politics. OMG you mean she used her political influence?? WOW, nobody has ever done that before.

12. "...she objected to listing polar bears or beluga whales as endangered in Alaska. You know what, take a look at some of the other countries that border the North Pole region and see what they're doing to the polar bears and beluga whales.

13. Hey, if she wasn't trying to secure federal funds for the town that she represented, she would not be doing her job. This item is totally senseless. You mean to tell me that Democrats would not try to do that for the people they represent? Gimme a break!!!!

These are simply facts about Governor Palin which may or may not, depending on your viewpoints (and obvious tolerance to dishonesty) cause you to rethink your vote.

The fact remains that if my 11 year old daughter was impregnated as a result of forceable rape, Palin would force her to carry the pregnancy full term, thus making her a double victim...by the perpetrator, and the government forcing her to bare the scars, and child of a criminal act.

It bares noting that the engineer of the straight talk express has chosen to partner up with a champion of pork barrel earmarks, including supporting, then distancing herself from the bridge to nowhere.

She has on a few occasions, displayed a misuse of power, particularly poinent in that she seeks to replace Dick Cheney.

For all of their claims of her "experience", the fact remains that she left Wasilla 20 million in debt, her role as the head of the Alaskan National Guard is mostly an honorary title, and she did almost nothing in the first two years of her Governorship, besides negotiating one agreement with petroleum companies. Her pro-oil, anti-ecological viewpoints are well documented.

Your arguement that all politicians lie and that she is not the first politician to misuse her power fails to explain away her claiming to be something better than what she is.

Sarah Palin is not change, she is more of the same. For all their grandiose talk and promises to "clean up Washington," their actions speak volumes. They aren't part of the solution, they are part of the problem.

Having said all of that Tim, welcome to my blog. I do not moderate any comments, and encourage any and all discussions, arguements, and points of views from all sides. And while you can see this is intended to illustrate my views, which are decidedly liberal, you will find a conservative or two stopping by from time to time and providing some counter-point.

One of which has a blog called Religiopolitical Talk. It is linked at the right. You may find it, and its author of interest.

Thanks again, Kimba

As a librarian, I've been concerned about Sarah Palin's alleged attempt to ban books from her local library. Today, the American Library Association published this article, which says that, according to the Anchorage Daily News, Palin didn't specifically try to ban any books, but asked Wasilla's library director how she would feel about banning books if asked to do so. The library director responded in the way most librarians would, which is to say that she would definitely have a major problem with banning books. Shortly thereafter, Sarah Palin fired the library director for "not fully supporting the mayor."

The timing of this controversy is interesting, because each year during the last week of September, librarians observe Banned Books Week, which calls attention to the hundreds of attempts made each year to have books removed from library shelves for what some people consider to be objectionable content. You'd probably be surprised by some of the books that people have tried to ban. George Bernard Shaw said it best: "Censorship ends in logical completeness when nobody is allowed to read any books except the books that nobody reads."
