In a surprising turn in the "Anybody but a Clinton" period of American politics, Ted Kennedy officially endorsed Barack Obama. Obama in his acceptance speech, stated the election was not about gender, not about religion, not about rich vs. poor, but the past and the future.
And if so, why would he so closely align himself with the oldest of guards, the one politician still in office that so embodies everything he so eloquently professes to despise? What on earth possessed him? I understand Patrick and Caroline, especially Caroline, who authored a wonderfully crafted New York Times op-ed piece proclaiming Barack the closest thing she has seen to her father in her lifetime. They are youthful, and respresent the group upon which his message of hope and change resonates the loudest.
But to align himself with Ted, to make a point of entering the hall with him for the State of the Union speech (which he very well may have overshadowed, something almost never done), and then to be seen together during the speech, just strikes me as the strangest bedfellows ever.
The pundits seem to think Teddy will help marginalize the Hispanic vote for Hillary, already the candidate of most unions, and especially strong with the United farm Workers, but let's face facts. We knew JFK, and Teddy, you ain't him. You either Obama, but obvious comparisons have been drawn. And the Kennedy name is a cache cashed over and over until it was overdrawn, from the back rooms of Massachusetts and in Congress, to the 18" of water his former lover met with her untimely death. Among the Hispanic community, your word, your support, and your endorsement sir, means absolutely Nada.
